Additional Information

George Hamuel left Phillis and his two sons and emmigrated to New Zealand, sometime after Wilfred was born. The precise details of his life at this time are uncertain, owing to some inconsistencies in the records. A summary is given below.

  • According to Phillis Brown’s entry in the 1911 England census she was then still married to George Hamuel, but she and their two boys were living with her parents without him.
  • According to George Hamuel’s death certificate he married an Emily Marshall in or about 1904 in London, and she gave birth to their daughter two years later. However, it has not been possible to confirm these events from the civil registers.
  • According to George Hamuel’s death certificate he emmigrated to New Zealand in or about 1907, and lived there until his death in 1919. Rather unusually the person registering his death was the funeral undertaker, and this must raise some doubts about the accuracy of the recorded facts (e.g. his mother’s maiden name was recorded as ‘Hamuel’ instead of ‘Howells’).

George Cornelius Hamuel Brown and his wife Florence Mary also spent some time in New Zealand. They are listed as passengers on the M.V. “Port Vindex” that departed Wellington, N.Z., for the UK on 29 Feb 1964. His occupation is recorded as retired Station Master.

George Cornelius Hamuel Brown and his wife Florence Mary had two children: Ronald G Brown born in Steyning Jul-Sep 1922, and Cyril Brown born in Steyning Jan-Mar 1930.
